Music enthusiasts will have a rare opportunity to hear acoustic double-neck guitarist and Candyrat recording artist Ian Ethan Case on Saturday, November 19, at 7:30 p.m. at Kranzberg Arts Center. Songs from Cases new album, Run Toward the Mountains will fill the program with a rich array of soundfrom solo acoustic to multi-layered compositions created through live electronic looping. Case will be joined by drummer Jharis Yokley, a recent standout from the Berklee College of Musics Global Jazz Institute.
Case has been gaining increasing recognition among the national music community for his original compositions, highly-innovative playing techniques, which exploit the full potential of the double-neck guitars 18 strings, and innovative use of 21st century looping technologyall of which combine to create music that has been described by critics and listeners as revolutionary, stunning, magical, and even spiritual. Two-time US National Fingerstyle Guitar Champion and international touring artist Don Ross described Cases music as a transfixing brand of energetic minimalism, with intense grooves and a harmonic sense reminiscent of Pat Methenys best moments.
Case recently signed with Candyrat Records, the Milwaukee-based label which launched the careers of acoustic guitar stars such as Andy McKee and Antoine Dufour. Videos of his playing have reached around the globe, receiving over 12 million views in the past year and drawing unsolicited praise from legendary bassist Leland Sklar (James Taylor, Phil Collins), producer Steven Miller (Dave Matthews Band, Bobby McFerrin), and Windham Hill Records Founder Will Ackerman.
One first-time California listener wrote, Watching Ian play is not listening to music . . . its a full mind experience. He performed at Muriel Andersons 2013 All-Star Guitar Night at the annual NAMM convention in Anaheim; has collaborated with 4-time Grammy-winning cellist Eugene Friesen; and has been featured on NPRs Here and Now program as well as on the nationally-syndicated public radio show Echoes.
Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Jharis Yokley started playing drums at the age of 5 and hasnt looked back since. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Jharis has performed with and/or learned from Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, Joe Lovano, Ron Savage, Alain Mallet, Terri Lyne Carrington, and many more of the worlds finest musicians. He has performed at such prestigious festivals and venues as the Newport Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Dizzy's, and St. Louis Jazz at the Bistro, among others.
